Hi all, new 340 owner :)

Post by alexroberts_12 » 19 Feb 2011 07:26 pm

hey everyone! im alex, im a mechanic from north wales, coming from a line of turbo'ing 1.6 8v novas, redtop conversions on corsas, starlet turbos and a bit of vtec, i now own a volvo 340 and i love it, by far the most fun car i've ever owned, so i thoughts its about time i signed up to a forum to learn more about this little gem! its a 1.4 3 door H reg shell, with a 2.0 from a 360 with running gear too from what i believe, it has a welded diff, hydraulic handbrake and stripped out lol.

now wondering what cheap mods can i do to get a bit more poke out of the 2 litre engine? is there a carb upgrade from say a 2.3 engine? or would it even be worth the 2.3 conversion or turbocharging either? sorry if this had been asked before! thanks very very much for reading and i appreciate all replys and opinions! hope im made welcome, thanks alot :)

alex. :340:

Anyone who's into v300's are made welcome mate, best thing you can do to get power is just put a 2.3 turbo into it and if you won't ever more put some twin 40's on.
Ohh and get an uprated cam, I don't know to much on tuning them bit I'm sure a few others on here won't mind giving you some tips.
Welcome
P.s get some pics up and is it a Matt black one? Which was on piston heads

yeah thats the one! was up for 650, i gave 550 for it delivered to my house, has the guy had managed to snap both rear hubs! which in my opinion is epic, and he deserves manpoints lol. it came with 2 in a box, but i just couldnt pull the shaft off the get them off the old peices of axle, so i bought a puller and that still didnt do it! luckily, one of my local scrapyards had a 340 there on 55k miles, so i just had the whole axle, so did some thorough mechanicing before even driving the thing haha! had it on the road for a couple of weeks now, loving it! did someone on here own it at one point? could i turbocharge a carb'ed engine possibly? thanks again!

Welcome in dude.
If youre already on 360 running gear you might as well just put a 2.3 turbo from a 940 in.
Theyre cheap enough. And plenty around.

See this thread: http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... 13&t=10269

Or massive bike/40/45 carbs.

Sounds good, you can only get redblock turbos as an injection engine, if your going to turbo it you may aswell just buy a whole engine

Yep I'll have a look on that site now, and not sure how to post pictures as I'm on my phone? Which is a blackberry bold if anyone has one and knows how to on these! Aha! Cheers guys!!

Welcome! The rear hubs can be tricky to repair but not impossible, basically any short axle repair involves a new rear wheel bearing or module replacement of the aluminium hub, axlehsaft and brake backplate (separation of the backplate also requires a new bearing) there are some treads about but I guess you are over that now unless you need spares. Getting CV drive flange off with a puller is the easy bit :)

I havn't gotten anywhere near the turbo mod yet, still welding a rust monster saloon, but doing pretty much the same as the thread link above with a 96 940 2.3 HPT (high pressure turbo).

If you have a low compression engine (88-on carb, 87-on injection) you could upgrade to high compression which will give you more low end torque. Cam and carb would be the main mods, then complete 2.3 Turbo (+ additional boost up to 11psi for free should max out the drivetrain).
