Re: V40s?
It's a 440 in a dress.
Still made in holland, so in 18months will have exactly the same parts issues that we have, the 400's now have etc. I really really don't like the things, but that is from a driving point of view. Lots of people think they are amazing!
S'Painter had a T4 for a bit, so worth him getting involved too

Re: V40s?
Cheers chris. Just the kind of opinion I was lookin for. Im not expecting them to be nice to drive. Just loadspace, lazy comfort and mpgs. Id not be falling in love with it for the rest of my life so parts issues down the line might not be a bother, but thats still great to know man cheers.Chris_C wrote:It's a 440 in a dress.

Sure Steve'll see this thread at some point, so we shall see what he says.
Re: V40s?
Phase 1 cars are generally poor with dull interiors (acres of shiny grey plastic and grubby looking seats), poor handling and aren't that good in general.
Phase 2 cars (2000+) got a much nicer interior, widened track, better lights and are a much more modern car.
1.6's are very slow, 1.8's not much better (GDi's have problems), 2.0's are getting there, 2.0T's are probably the best, T4's are rapid but unruly. diesels have timing belt issues.
If you just want something cheap as a workhorse then an early non GDi 1.8 or 2.0 is fine, If you want an 'nice' car as a DD then a phase 2 2.0T CD is actually not a bad car to own.

Re: V40s?
I was driving my old mans 2.0T V40 for a year as a daily for towing etc. Although towing well over its weight capacty whilst towing my 850R from london to Swansea the car returned 30MPG.
As a non hassel daily tbh it was a cracking motor, and i couldnt break it!!

Timing belt issues as in they snap, need changed often, slip, or are a pain to do man?V6 Man wrote:If you want an 'nice' car as a DD then a phase 2 2.0T CD is actually not a bad car to own.
Cheers for all that. Great info indeed.
Looks like I kinda have a model to aim for.^
Though I'll probably settle for something terrible and cheap.
At least I have been forewarned.

Re: V40s?
Mother has one, they do rust from bit odd places, paint is fine and all of sudden paint chips off revealing long developed rust.
Driver's seat is not very spacious, 360 has a lot more room, for me it is bit challenge to hit brakes on that thing as my knee hits steering wheel and side of shoe is hitting side of brake pedal etc.
Steering is completely dead, it is like steering wheel would not be attached to anything, how ever car does turn when one turns steering wheel, it works probably by magic, so remember to charge crystals.
Motor is installed wrong way around, it means timing belt replacing is not fun at all. I think it was every 5 years or some miles, can't remember.
Mother's car has not passed mot for quite many times, it is not very serious, but as they put red label on it saying not allowed to drive, it does cause bit of issues. It has had broken front spring, emissions way too high, seatbelt worn, brake lines broken.
Problems without MOT issues are central electric unit fried itself, did cost 1000 euros, also loads of rust at top of the door frame and such odd places.
Nothing wrong with motor really, even it is Renault unit or maybe because of that, it is not very powerful and not the most economical either, I prefer that my french crap has nicer motor in it, but I'm biased.
Oh and 360 has much better boot space if hatchback, at least my mother's wagon v40 is really tiny, there is not much boot space or any other space. My french crap looks smaller but even that has more space inside, especially usable space in a boot.
Also from V40 it is bit difficult to see out and it has no steerable front wheels, at least when trying to park it, thing just does not turn.
