Does anyone know if this plastic tape on the spring was factory fitted...or after market. What is it called and is it important. Should I get rid?

quite often it's the paint that hangs on the spring in flaps/flops, this allmost looks like spirap

it might be previously fitted to stop friction of the spring with the spring cup, but that isn't a real problem; keeping the draining holes clear of dirt is more important

I agree 1000%
Anything keeping dirt and/or moisture should be eliminated as a possible future problem...I say "to the skip" :)

NOT factory, probably fitted in an attempt to silence cup/spring noise.
