Bro's 5-Link Setup

Post by ducatievo » 12 Nov 2005 07:34 pm

Thought I'd share what my brother has been up to on his 'Drift' Volvo again; he's spent the last 4 days making a 5-link rear setup on it, to improve the handling while drifting etc. Also added an in-car alloy fuel tank and hydraulic drift e-brake (forgot to grab pics of that). Obviously still needs to be painted/powdercoated etc. :D Next job is to refurb the R19 16v engine he's got and stick that in.

Looks good so far. Well done for going to all that effort.
Fair play to the 300 it does have one of the best leaf spring set ups.
I would be interested to have a spin in this to compare it to my set up.

Looking at the pics properly I've noticed it is a 340! bit slow today.
Is he going to fit an anti roll bar?

Also talking of the 16valve motor haw are you going to get around the manifold?

i'd love to see some videos of his car
He's got some small vids but they're all mobile phone types, next time I've got my camera out I'll take a clip and pass it on.
chance he would share sizes of brackets etc
Brackets he's just made as necessary so it fits, but if you wanted rod lengths etc no problem. He still needs to clean it up and get the alignment double checked, only been running for 2 days on the 5-link.
best leaf spring set ups
He snapped the leaf spring while drifting, hence the move to the 5-link setup.
minilites wanna sell em
umm...no! :D
I've noticed it is a 340! bit slow today.
Is he going to fit an anti roll bar?
Yup tis a 340 1.7, once he's finished the coil over on the front, and set the spring rates he will see how it goes, and add an anti-roll bar if necessary.
16valve motor haw are you going to get around the manifold
Not even looked at the 16v as yet; it's sitting in the garage awaiting overhaul, once he's ready to fit it any problems will be looked into. :)

Now that is very impressive. I'd love to see how that thing handles. Was your brother not tempted to go for a Watt linkage instead of the Panhard rod? A lot more work I guess.

I've had a dark plan hatching for a while involving making a pair of subframes which bolt into the stock suspension mountings, attached to which are the mountings for an IRS setup with coilovers. Damn you for kinda beating me to it :D

cheers

that is a nice piece of enginering (don't lnow if that's correct english). Where do the shocks come from? Respect for that. My utility belt tells me it's to the track batman.

I with everyone else here, we need videos of this beast in action! That looks superb, all credit to you both for the work that has gone into that. Soooo much going on in all areas now with the 300's. People picking up where Volvo left off and making some very unique cars, it's great to see, espeically so long after production ceased.

Wow, very nice work! Looks like it was like that when it rolled out of the production line. :P

Thx for the comments peeps! :D

I guess so, he's had experience of the panhard setup before so it was the perferred route (easier to make in limited time etc). And whenever it's off the road he steals my car, so I perfer him to do it asap! :D *lol*
Where do the shocks come from?
The shocks are AVO coilovers with 250lb springs to fit a Vauxhall Corsa; but will prolly be switching to 275/300ib springs, as it still catches the arch slightly (yes they are cut back too).
all credit to you both for the work that has gone into that
All credit must go to my brother, I just take the pics and feed him Red Bull, he does 99% of the work

Few more tweaks needed, strengthing of the rear turrets as they flex something cronic, and also improve the rear shock fixing on the axle to allow more freedom of movement.

AVO shocks stand out as they have red bushes. I cant think of anyother made that uses them. Good way of identifing them.
