HELP!! Viscous fans

Hello all, is it worth removing the viscous fan from engine and fitting an electrical one/two in it's place?

Is it worth it ie power wise, I'm really begining to hate the wooshing underbonnet noise when I rev the engine.

Help please as I want to do this tomorrow if it's worth it

I always remove the fan off my amazons. You can use the fan and sensor off a 340. There is pleanty of space on a 240 for it, should gain you 1 or 2 bhp and very slightly better fuel consumption.

Excellent Dai thanks, just a brief question, what do I need from the donar? ie what do I need to strip from the 340?

HELP!! has anyone else had experience doing this? I'd just like to know the best way of hooking up the thermostatic switch.

I have the 340 fan assembly and wiring harness. Do I have to make a hole in the rad to fit the therm switch then hook the earth up to the body, Do I need to fit a relay or just an inline fuse?

Please help!!

If you want to totally remove the hassle, you can get a kit from various people including Kenlowe. Personally, I'd want a bigger fan than a 340 one for a 240. Take a poke around at Looms' in Derby at big cars with leccy fans, and scope out what would fit. Try to find a 'basic' one with just two wires too!

Thanks James, thats where it came from, Dai suggested the 340 from (shame on him if it's wrong, but cheers if it's ok

) Haha, anywho, I think I may take a drive down on sat as my old grey 240 glt saloon is in there now, no doors or interior,

What's the best way to rig up a switch for the fan?

Yep, I think that's the way I'm going to go use the 340 harness, with the positive going to a relay which is activated by a 'fused' ignition wire

Come on people help me here!!

You could put the sensor off a 700 turbo. There is a short length of tube with the boss and sensor in. If you cut your original bottom hose it will fit in.

And that's why I love volvo's evrything seems interchangable, now where do I find a 700 turbo bottom hose? Off to Loom's scrap yard tomorrow then!

So just to clarify (?) this bottom hose section with sensor should mate to the 340 harness which will be powered by a fused and relayed power sourch activating a fan of my choice, I have the 340 fan, but I'll lok at a 205 diesel one I have, or whatever looms' scrape yard has?

Is that Ok?

Right I have it, unless any person gathered here has any objections to why my car should not be wed to it's new frankenstein fan, I shall pronounce them heavy brick and desk fan

Yep, took me a weekend on my own with all my tools, the axel was a bugger to get off. All the parts are living on in my 240 GL (T) estate, here's the engine at present:

Almost time to drop in, after filling the gearbox oil and putting in the clutch cylinder and etc etc
