:.:VOLVO 360GL with $8500 to spoil my car:.:

Post by Maffooo » 16 May 2006 10:26 am

Hey all, ive recently gone mad. My first car, being a Volvo 360gl 2litre happiness is sitting around being cleaned every now and then but not actually picking up much credit. So ive decided to make it my project car. I'm dead willing to spend anything upto 9k to spoil this car!, enginewise and looks.

where do i start? what kinda engines would fit in this thing?

i was thinking for starters a black paintjob, lowering springs and new wheels.. but what performance wise?

any suggestions appreciated

Wow, that sounds like the sort of thing that most of us just dream of.

Are you in Australia?

Hmm i'm struggling to find a conversion for NZ $'s into GBP but if its same as US $'s then its about £4500  Not sure what other Volvo's you got over there but 740/940 turbo engines will fit straight in, or perhaps a T5 engine with an adapter? Or you could keep it NA and spend money on a fair bit of tuning work, some headwork, throttle bodies, fancy management, etc. Ultimately for a road car though your probably better going turbo for better mpg, less of a pig to drive as the NA may lose its low down torque. I'd be tempted to say go a little different with the colour, nothing over the top but have a non factory colour as over here there's already a few black one's so no point in spending lots of money for the same colour  Also i'd say 15's maximum for the alloys or its just going to look over the top. Really depends what kind of look your going for,
cheers

Use the Financial Times currency converter, indeed, somewhere about £2,800. I'd say get the suspension sorted for a good ride, that'll improve it no end. Dai is our parts guy, not sure about shipping costs to NZ though.

I'd say, plan what you want and cost it, and see if it meets your budget. No point going out and blowing a large chunk on, say, wheels, to find you can't afford other stuff when you could get some cheaper 400 series wheels.

Ah ok I was only a bit out then

Hmm possibly ignore some of the stuff I listed then, i'd say definately go for a 740/940 turbo engine as anything else is going to cost a lot more for not much gain really. Not sure how much a respray would cost but I think they're £600+ here so definately do as MJ said and make a list of priorities!

2.3 turbo from a 7/9 as Ali says... if you know enough about engines and electronics to make it work megasquirt it, Spax shocks all round, then get it nitrous'd and tuned at the same time. Completely standard looking car, that would shift, and should make budget :D

(OK, so maybe you didn't want to look standard, loose the gas for alloys and whatever other bit's you want, thats a personal taste preference thing anyway)

Thanks guys this has definately been alot of help. i will forsure look into suitable racing springs and some mag wheels with some nice grippy tyres.
i like the sound of a 940 turbo, just gotta accidently drive someones 940 off a cliff and pay my regards.. for the engine. Il hunt one down somehow. for now lowering and new wheels is my priority, and perhaps looking into a paintob
:D .. dark metallic blue with some silver vinlys perhaps.
