squealing noise

Post by Statler »

Whilst plumbing other mysteries on my 1.4 340 (see 'cuts out at junctions') I came across this which might be useful to others-I would also be interested to know if it is a common fault.
I had a squealing noise on starting from cold that would last for 5 miles or so. I put it down to fan belt or water pump on the way out. I eventually discovered the noise was coming from the distributor and after first suspecting the amount of end float on the shaft (actually no worse than on other assemblies at the scrappers) on closer inspection found that the culprit was actually the two year old (Halfords) rotor arm. The pop rivet on the brass strip was coming loose allowing the strip to vibrate and shriek like a mad thing. A new rotor arm cured it.
If only it were always that simple........
