b18ft & 300 series gearbox

Post by monkeyismycopilot »

Hello,

I happen to have a b18ft engine from the 480 and I would like to know if the manual or automatic gearbox from a 300 series bolts onto the b18ft engine.

kind regards

The garbox on the 300 series are on the back.

What needs to match the bolts is the "clutch house" (I do not know the name in english), and yes it fits perfectly

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't, there would be no room for the Box. It'd have to go in the tunnel pretty much between the seats, and that is far too narrow. The Spit box sits between your legs IIRC (and is a pain to get to...) and is bolted to the back of the engine in traditional fashion. (I do however know someone who has put a 2L 16v Sprint engine in one  )

dont think its posible but anything is possible i guess with money and skill in which case you would be better off doing somthing much stronger and powerfull.

Yep, it's a transaxle design

Sounds like an interesting project. Here's a good picture from a 300 brochure from 1989 of a 360 GLT.

It shows the layout that makes the 300 a well balanced car.

Now that's a good picture!

My first idea was to supercharge the engine in the spitty but hmmm I'm not keen on that as the engines are not that great.

Now the b18ft with a rich mod ecu is around 170bhp.

I should also add that I'm not after buying a 300 to just strip the poor thing and throw it away. I'd rather source from scrap yard or a seller on here/ebay.

My b18ft is complete minus the head/turbo. I have a complete loom etc etc.

What's wrong with the Spit engine? The 1.3 is generally regarded as being bulletproof! The 1.5 slightly less so due to the 3-bearing crank, but still fairly reliable. Interesting article on them: http://www.jyclassics.co.uk/article1.htm

Chuck a 6-pot in there

Hi Nick,

I'm only going on what I read on the spitfire forum. There is a guy who supercharged his 1500cc lump using a mini SC unit.

that's working still. I understand the 1300cc is revvy and the 1500 has the torque (spittys) I did read about the 3 bearing crank.

my dad had 2 spitfires 69 and 73

both 1.3

his first was a 6speed 90hp 1.3 that weighed under 700kg (specialy tuned)

his second was a 5 speed 70hp

Now they are hardly slow cars :P

the 1.5 was crap and less powerfull made for us market very sad :(

cheers
