16V R-Sport engine

Post by Fuse »

I just found these:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/s ... G_3097.jpg
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/s ... G_3098.jpg

Translation from Swedish to English:

Volvo's new 16 valve engine for 343 gives you full 231hp (170kW) in stock (can be trimmed for more) It's built on thick-walled B19 block which is bored 96mm which gives displacement of 2315cm^3

Cylinder head has two over head camshafts with 4 valves per cylinder. Angle between valves is designed to give maximum fill? (Direct translation, I don't know the english word, but it means the amount of fuel-air mixture in the cylinder) and high compression durability.

Intake and exhaust ports give very good flow through the head (same type as used in F1 engines). Intake valves are 34,5mm and exhaust valves are 31,5mm, stem diameter is 7mm.

Camshafts have 12mm lift and double valve springs, valve mechanism is light and good up to 9000rpm.

Extra light con rods are tennifer treated and bolts are stretch type to ensure maximum endurance.

Pistons are forged with reliefs for valves. Pistons are lighter and shorter than stock pistons and also piston pins are lightened.

Pistong rings are lighter and lower than stock rings to ensure endurance under very high RPM. Flywheel is also lightened.

Specs:

Engine

Bore: 96mm
stroke: 80mm
Displacement: 2316cm^3
Max hp: 231hp@7200rpm
Max torque: 245Nm@6000rpm
Carbs: 2x Solex 48 ADDHE
Cylinder head: DOHC
Valve diameter: intake 34,5mm exhaust 31,5mm
Compression ratio: 11,2:1
Pistons: Forged Mahle pistons with extra thin piston rings
Con rods: Tennifer treated and extra light
Exhaust manifold: tubular 4 to 1 type
Ignition: Modified breakerless electronic system which gives constant high voltage under high RPM

At the beginning of 1981 following items become available: Muffler, dry sump, displacement variations from 2.3l to 2.5l and 2.6l. Modified cylinder head with bigger valves, modified cam shafts etc... With these modifications maximum output will be varying between 270hp and 300hp. Contact Volvo R-Sport for more detail.

Wish I had the money to build one of those!! That would be my ideal engine for Fioner (without going the turbo route)

S.A.M in Sweden has those R-Sport 16V heads in their catalog, I don't know though if they still got those, but S.A.M bought the whole remaining R-Sport stock from Volvo and all the molds and plans for the parts, so I think they still have those heads. :P

Of course there's also the common 16V head from B234 and B204 engines which is widely available.

I have a feeling those may be the same as - or very close to - the standard 16v head valve sizes. Very little information is available on this head, but some of the pictures I've seen suggest it's a modular construction, like the 'standard' later 16v head. The latter was supposedly developed by Cosworth...but it would make more sense if they'd designed a race head for Volvo, and then Volvo had re-used the designs years later for a road-car head.

The DOHC head for the OHV B20 is a bit of a scary one. sm56

Im sure on turbobricks ive heard em banging on that the 16V head was designed by Porsche? but yeah, before i saw that i heard Cosworth.

Im not convinced on the Cosworth involvment though as there is no record of it anywhere, despite year by year records of all Cosworths engine projects being widely available on the net.

Mentions of the work on heads and complete engines for Ford, Mercedes, Opel, Chevy, Triumph, VW, Buick/Olds/Caddy, Pontiac, and tons more, esp once in the 90s.

Only ONE Volvo mention i see...

It could well be an e-myth. Porsche were involved with the whiteblock (ally) heads, and with the intake design for the Volvo-ised Renault F2n units in the 400s. Perhaps it's more likely that it was Porsche who got involved, especially given that the 16v head and whiteblocks are very similar in terms of design and construction?

A relative of a friend works for Cosworth, so I suppose confirmation could be got from the inside.

cheers
