rim refurb

well since i havent got the funds to get my rims refurbed (at least £140 for the set), im deciding to do it myself.

as you can see, they look shite because of the lacquer effing up. it doesnt look too noticeable, but thats because of the camera. if you were to see these rims for yourself you would agree with me.

i was thinking that i should get some wet n' dry and remove all the lacquer, or use nitro mors. then give them a good once-over with some fine wet n' dry, and then finally polish them, but im worried that because theyre aluminium, they might oxidise? should i lacquer them again afterwards?

anyone got any pointers or tips?

Not knowing what wheels are made of, I think they are an alloy of ali, not straight ali, so I wouldn't know if this is of use.

Straight ali will form an oxide instantly, literally under 10 secs, as it is a VERY reactive metal, but luckily the oxide isn't. As I said, I think alloys are indeed made of an alloy, so I wouldn't risk it, and would re laquer. I've seen a few how too guides before, try a google for it. Those wheels will look tight on a 300.

Or do what Ali did and just paint them white for a quick, cheap, good looking solution

They're dying for the centres to be painted matt black and the rest of the rim polished. You can leave alloy bare just need to go over it with some autosol when you wash the car.

right i photoshopped the wheel with a black centre and polished rim - is this what you meant?

did the best i could as it was quite hard to make shiny thing black. should look better than this once its done.

if you look at the rim where the top left spoke meets, you can see a bubble sort of thing - i dont know what this is but seems to me as if the alloy has bubbled up like rust?

edit: oops ive just realised that this is a different shot of the rim than the pic i first posted

I didn't want you guys to feel left out.

The silver ones are more 'stock' but need refurbing and since I will be repainting the car, i might as well redo the wheels then as well.

Once the new ones are cleaned up and bolted on, we'll see how they look.

I would go for the black with polished lip but it does depend on what colour your car is.
