Brakes binding - revelation

Post by bogbasic »

Folks, as per my previous post, since having the servo refurbished my front brakes have progressively seized when hot. A new master cylinder did not cure this but I found a web site that says this problem is due to the push rod(s) in the servo not being adjusted correctly. Apparently if the push rod is too long the brakes are permanently on, slightly. Also, since the piston in the master cylinder is not in its correct resting place, the brake fluid which expands when the callipers get hot cannot flow back into the reservoir. Hence the hotter they get the more the brakes bind. The firm that refurbished the servo must have reset the pushrod adjustment or fitted a new pushrod.

Does anyone know how to adjust the pushrod from the servo to the master cylinder. I can just set it to the same length as a spare I have, but someone might know a better way?

For info, the website is http://www.brakesint.co.uk/technical.html

Cheers, bogbasic.

Why not take it back to the people who refurbed your servo and tell them to sort it out?

Take off the master cylinder, there's a long bolt in there and I think you just turn that to alter the adjustment.

Many thanks, its just an adjustment so I would rather do it myself than remove the servo and post it back to Rochdale and wait another 10 weeks. I guess I should just turn the pushrod adjuster back in and check that it just touches the master cylinder piston, rather than pressing it in.

For completeness... that was the problem i.e. the pushrod needed a bit of adjustment. Now the car runs well and is capable of some serious braking at last!
