Engine problem.

Post by germ »

hey all,

i did a compression test on my 1.7 and noted results. but thats not the problem, after this....

i put the plugs back in and the car doesent idle well at all,900rpm then falls down and up.

toke it out for a drive and it made the strangest noise like running on 3 cyl or like a go-kart. lack of power etc not pulling properly like a block or something.

any ideas?

mybe from cranking with out the plugs? burned renix :? or leaky leads/dist cap.

Cheers

Sounds like a misfire at a guess. Was out in a mate's manta running on 3cyls and it sounded like a scooby. That was just a loose plug lead.

When I managed to burn a valve in the 340 that sounded like a scooby - so much so that every thought it was one untill they actualy saw the car!

with the motor running briefly pull one lead off at a time to see if the engine runs even rougher, may even stall completely, if you pull a plug and the engine note doesn't change, then you know which cylinder isn't firing.

... everything was fine before you unscrewed the plugs? If so, then use delahare's method & check the offending plug & HT lead.

^^well,

looked this morning in a desperate rush to get it working before college.

toke out a random plug to see if it was gummed up and sooty(forgot to say i did the redex treatment)

and...went to clean it up and noticed a big crack down it near the nut shaped bit(glass glased bit) and thought mhhh this cant be good

put a spare plug in to test and voila! ran like a dream. :P

somthing soo simple...i feel such a prat

any way thanks very much all

Will

P.s compression test results
cyl1 cyl2 cyl3 cyl4
Test 1. 180psi 130psi 160psi 190psi
12.5bar 9 bar 11bar 13bar
(retested at 155psi)

tested twice all gave same exept second.

Test 2 16bar 14bar 15bar 15bar
With redex just put (tea spoon per cyl)

Test 3 200psi 200psi 200psi 200psi when settled
14bar 14bar 14bar 14bar

Test 4 same as above put redex in and let it blow out, then tested and same results yielded.

i havent got my haynes manual with me so dont know what the compresions are ment to be :(

Cheers again

Dunno what it is meant to be for your car, but 160+ is good for most things, let alone a 20 year old engine! the 130 is a bit of a worry.

a motorbike i'm running around on at the moment blew 110,110,70 and 50  you can really feel it is down on power.
