Problem with red paint

Post by Duvel78 »

My question is: how can we get a good looking red colour on a Volvo 300 when it's dull / pink? Which products are very good and recommanded? (more than a simple polish) Any tips? And what about the bumpers that suffers much more from that problem (see the pic on that german GLT) Same treatment on it? (my question isn't a joke DeKay  )

For faded paint I used Simoniz Color restorer and then I waxed it couple times with Simoniz original paste wax. Some work but it came out nicely.
For bumpers I used some plastic polish-stuff by Würth.

I'm sure you can bring up any paint with a bit of work. As long as it hasn't been over cutted and there is still sufficient paint depth to cut back to.

One of my previous cars was green. When I got it, it was basically white/grey and faded very bady. T Cut and Polish helped, but it did require polishing regularly - may be the poor quality of the original paint in this case.

It will be interesting to hear other peoples experiences - Dave needs a red car for one.

Ultraviolets rays from the sun are probably the problem number one. The paint on the 300 series is very good but the red paint... Not so good, and the fact that it's a non metallic paint doesn't help at all... :(

I read an article (someone restoring a Citroën 2cv) and he was talking about COMPOUNDS; someone has tried that? I only tried polish!

Roof was allmost pink and without shine. The other side of the car was also allmost matte-colouerd. :P Of course the shine doesn't last forever but when you wax it few times in a year it should last quite good. Paint restorer I have used only once because it contains some abrasive ingredients. It helped though and now the polishing/protecting wax is enough to bring out the shine. If you wan't more permanent/professional results you can try something, for which I don't know the english word, but they use polishing device which has allmost as much revs as an angle sander has. They use some abrasive paste or something with it and kinda like sand away veeery thin layer of paint/lacquer. I would let the professional do that though because those thingies has so much revs that it is easy to spoil your paint for good if you don't know what you are doing. :P Many car-polishing/painting companies will do that job for you.

Out of the three red 360's I have, the one I'm using has the best paint, after being cut back with T-cut, then waxed, although it hasn't been cleaned for a while, must do that sometime.

When I got the car the rear doors and one rear quarter were faded badly, possibly a bad respray, although the other good red 360 I have is exactly the same, rear doors and one rear quarter are faded! Very odd indeed! So my dad reprayed the doors and rear quarter on the 360 I'm using, and I think he did a really good job to match the slightly faded red. Red is a nightmare to match anyway. He also managed to repair a bad scratch on the front edge of the bonnet and blend it in, where there go rusty, but this was just a scratch luckily.

The bumpers however on my 360 had both faded slightly, not too much yet, but enough to notice, I must find out about the plastic restorer that Würth do that Fuse mentioned, as I knew a rep for them. What's more annoying is the other car has really bright red bumpers, but they are scratched and damaged. The other one that is practically a shell and has obviously stood for a longtime and not been cared for is as faded as anything, not pink though!

So red is not a good colour for maintaining as we all know, but when it's shining I think it's hard to beat on a 300, though black 360's, especially John's look fantastic too.

I personaaly think metallic grey with subtle body stripes is the best volvo option specially if it happens to have that rare old redline badge on the boot (and of course the lovely WWW. volvo300mania.com window sticker that became an optional extra in the later part of 2004 LOL )dosent fade or show the dirt either

Pete theres a 1.4 3 door for sale on that website we like and its in Aylesbury , I'm sure you could squeeze another one on the drive (its only a quid at the moment and its red/PINK .would be good for spares .nice looking front bumper for a start that I know you could sell )By the way when you have some time could I employ you to help make a mdf parcel shelf to carry my JBL 6x9's and I might be interested in cavity covers like the ones you made. I am hoping to get a new head unit and shuttle over christmas sm92 sm92 . You can now find my place a lot easier since I put the xmas lights on LOL

Hi Mick, I saw the 340, but never actually realised it was in Aylesbury! I don't think my Mum would be too pleased sm58 about any more landing, I think I've got a reprieve by promising to get rid of the crashed shell at some point! Still, looks interesting, had it have been a 3 door 360 GLT, well, I'm sure I could've made some room and done some sweet talking!

I would've loved to have made some cavity covers and a parcel shelf for you Mick, but I quit my job on Thursday! Stupid I know, just before Christmas and all, but things had come to a breaking point! I would now have trouble sourcing materials as cheaply, some of the machinery involved isn't available to me either, although I could manage the cavity covers, as I have the template I made to copy.

Well, must get off my backside and look for a job, can't be sat here allday! So Mick, I may be back in Cabinet Making soon, if so, I'd be glad to make those items for you, but I'm not so sure about my career decision anymore! May fancy a change. We'll see.

Hope you get the nice headunit you're after! sm92 I'm sure I heard something on the local news about some light aircraft trying to land in Milton Keynes on your housing estate, something about a lot of bright lights looking like a runway!

Just seen the pics, did you have to alter the brightness on the camera and dull it down! Like your avatar too! Pete

Lol, just edited as I'd seen them! :o Mick, good news for you (possibly!), with regard to your parcel shelf and cavity covers. I've been talking to some old colleagues, went to see one today who started his own business earlier this year. Well he convinced me to do the same, as did another friend I spoke to today! So I shall continue in Cabinet Making, I have enough motivation, self belief and hopefully the skills! So once I've sorted a few things tomorrow, need to talk to a land owner I know about a workshop etc. then the Bank, I will be able and willing at some point to carry out your work if you wish!
