Rough running 1.4

Post by magnumpi »

Hi guys, since i've owned my 1.4DL it has always had a rough idle, i.e at lights you can feel it rocking the car slightly with a little vibration etc.

Sometimes when i start it it sounds like it's on 3 cylinders, but give it a little rev and it sorts itself out.
Also when i turn it off it often over-runs, and this seems to be getting worse.

Also still occasionaly when driving it doesn't seem to be running quite right, but this doesn't happen often.

With the bonnet open all sounds well, no knocks or anything, no air leaks that i can tell.

As i'm eventualy going to do an engine swap it didn't bother me, but due to lack of funds and time at the moment it's doing my head in.

Futher more i'm meeting a rather tasty bit of skirt on Monday and i don't think it'll impress her much, but she might like the vibrations, you never know lol !!

So knowledgable guys out there whats up, any ideas, i suppose a good service would help but what else should i be looking out for??

Many thanks

I would start by giving the car a good service, such as oil change new air filter, spark plugs and oil filter and replace the ht leads with nice new ones that should get the car running better, my car used to have problems running smooth and whatnot and a good service solved this. also does it have a automatic choke? if so could this be buggered and causing the engine to run rough at start up? Also remove the distributer cap and give it a good spray with some WD40

Sorry i couldn't be of anymore use if i think of anything else ill let u know, but some one with more knowledge then myself will probably be along soon with better information.

Ok just did some reading up and it appears that the problem of the engine not stopping is due to faulty fuel shutoff solenoid, you can try to remove it and give it a clean but u may need a new one. I Have never had this problem so cannot be of much more help, but im sure someone on here will know.

Also read the stickied thread in this subforum called "1.4 340 running shakey? READ ME FIRST FFS!" Sorry about the title, the guy who wrote it was a bit of a nutter but it's a good write up

Cheers guys, good servicing is what it'll get first , then i'll see how it is.

Funnily enough it's developed an annoying fault with the headlights now, i'll start a new thread for that one, but while searching for the fault, i'd just turned the car off.
I could hear a sort of ticking/fizzing noise, which i traced to what i believe to be the fuel pump, from front of car right hand side of the engine between the block and suspension tower. That is the pump yes, or something else, suppose i should investigate that aswell too?

Try taking off distributer cap and cleaning interior. Mine gets slight oil film build up once a year causing a misfire.
