leaky old girl making a mess

Post by OapEM »

sorry lads this isn't a link to a mature ladies contact site, it concerns my B19e engined 360. It is leaking oil, this started when I jacked it up to bleed the brakes, it looked to be coming from the sump plug. I though cool, needs oil change anyway, dropped the oil and replaced the sump washer, was a tight fit motorfactors special but seems to do the job.
Yet it still leaks, I haven't used it much over the xmas period but I had a look and there's fresh oil on one of the sump bolts next to where the dipstick tube goes into the sump. What do we think, O ring in the dipstick tube?

Is this common? It's annoying making a mess, but at least the quality street tin has found a new lease of life lol

I doubt it will be that tbh. I would give the engine a good clean so then you will have a better idea where it is coming from.

I think it was the fuel pump mate. When I renewed it I couldn't get the spacer or gaskets so I glued my spacer back together and made gaskets lol. Money save fail
Hopefully she'll stop now, you're right though. I do need to give the block a blast off 8)
Thanks, Liam

My 360 leaks too. I figure its 23 years old, so its bound to want to mark its territory!

All oil levels never seem to drop though......... Only get a couple of spots on the driveway a day though - so compared to the leaks I used to get from my old Landrover and rangie, its not a lot to worry about............yet :?

My B19E leaks too - small amounts from a variety of places. I should probably lift it out, break it down and put in new gaskets throughout - but I frankly can't be bothered. It's only done 70k so doesn't warrant a rebuild.

Yeah, almost always from somewhere up top and leaking down and ending up looking like a leak down lower. Wipe it all up and then monitor where its coming from.

Favourites are the camshaft, fuel pump and rocker cover gaskets.

I was thinking that! Pleased they're easy. Well I can rule out the fuel pump as I have just replaced the spacer and gaskets, will check the rocker and cam seals. I'm sure they're fine though!
Cheers lads

Mine leaks near crankcase seal, but it is not the seal, it is gasket of some cover plate that forms crankcase seal housing, I did figure out that it is best to take engine out to replace that seal as front valance is bit on way even I remove radiator. Symptom was oily timing belt and lot of oil spilled to hood.
