That's a oil-separator box for crank case breather so yes you need it. :P In stock setup the hose from the top of the box is vented to the intake side but if you don't like to mess your manifold with crank-case fumes you can also vent it straight to atmosphere, for example hose under the car, if your local MOT allows it to be done emission-wise. Here's some info about the setup http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/EngineS ... hFlameTrap that's older style box in the article but same basic principle as with the taller box.

I wouldn't even try 'hanging' the engine from mounts not designed for it. You should be able to modify the mounts so they end up the right way up.

Ok, i changed the setup so that now one solid bolt goes through the rubber. i'm confident it will not fail.

the flyweel can only be mounted in 1 way, you'll have to check if the 8 holes line up and thats it. also check if the bolts aren't stretched or damaged and put some loctite on the bolts before remounting them, you won't be the first to destroy the engine and clutch because of a flywheel on the run!!

thanks volvodspec, i thought maybe crank position or timing would come into play but if not, even better.

holy shit, that would be nasty!

indeed, i know a guy with a 343, flywheel bolts worked loose at fairly high rpm, flywheel got wobly and slammed stuck into the clutchhouse, crankshaft broke and complete clutchhouse + clutch ripped into pieces.

and i know a guy with a 360 (is alsno known on this forum), flywheel bolts worked loos and the lucky bastard switched the engine of in time, only the heads of the bolts were damaged:D

btw, loctite 243 works fine on flywheel bolts :)

Erm...not as far as I'm aware. The PRV V6 has an off-set bolt spacing, and the whiteblock has a roll-pin key...but the redblock can go on any one of 8 ways round, and only one is correct if you're using the crank position sensor.

I don't know which it is for a Renix ignition flywheel (I assume that's what you're using?) off the top of my head. For a LH2.4 setup, you need the blank to appear in the starter hole with piston #1 at top dead centre. I have a feeling Renix may be the same, but don't quote me on it...!

well, i'm using the stock 360 flywheel on the b234f.

there are some markings on the flywheel but that doesn't help me much.

nope, the redblock flywheel has also the offset bolt patern, it will only fit in 1 way.

you can simply try this by putting the flywheel against the rear of the crank, turn the flywheel around and see if ALL the holes line up,

in case you're in doubt, put cyl 1 on top dead center, and then put the marking on the flywheel straight up

Erm...I've had friends put the flywheel on the wrong way around several times...?

I've got a couple of spare flywheels and a spare block lying around...I'll either return victorious, or with egg on my face...:)

now i'm starting to doubt aswell, had to swap a 360 flywheel about half year ago because the clutch plate digged in it a bit too much:D and from that, i can remember there was only 1 way of mounting possible.

now i'm curious how this one turns out

I've just tried a 'dog dish' flywheel (it was a 360 one with a Renix pattern, as it happens), and it will indeed go on any way round, bolt-wise. Gotta be careful to get the patter in the right place! :)
