hi all, just wondering, if i got new set of rear drums, shoes and new brake fluid, would that make a load of a difference to the rear braking because my drums at the moment are shot to s***, tried yanking the handbrake round a roundabout with my brother and its is totally gone, literally you pull the handbrake really suddednly and it just acts like your pressing the brakes on the pedal gently

could just be seized rear brake adjusters like I had on mine

well when i bought the car it was doing nothing on the guy's drive for a while, and right now since its off the road getting some "treatment" i was getting the impression it was prolly because of being idle for so long thats screwing the brakes up, im going to get aftermarket discs and pad for front (prolly diamond something) and get some other shoes for the rear and drums if it will help?, i will have a look at the rear brake adjusters but i havnt got a good idea where it could be?

my car was eating front pads and had very little handbrake until i got the adjuster sorted ,

any idea where i could find this brake adjuster thingy?, probably tackle the job when i order my new brakes etc .

Its inside the drums at the back spread between the pads!!

As for driving the blueline Chris no mate thats y i reconned the front struts from the scrappy!! Do all development off the car then fit enjoy, adjust and enjoy a bit more!!!

The common problem is the levers seize (metal plates that go through the back plate) you can take them off and free them up. I've had to do this 4 times now

Can anyone's car lock the rears on tarmac using the handbrake? Neither of mine can...? A cable handbrake is (in principle) there to hold the car still, not be an auxilliary footbrake. I think people fit hydraulic handbrakes for a good reason

I know that James but the handbrake operates the automatic shoe adjustment on our cars dosent it ?

so surely, it therefore follows that , if your handbrake isnt adjusted properly the automatic brake adjusters wont work properly and will cause weaker brakeing

360 rear brakes are different to the 340 brakes. On the 360s the adjuster is a hell of a job, but doesn't have much bearing on the braking ability, only the handbrake adjustment. It also takes AGES to come into correct adjustment, maybe 50 or so pedal applications, releasing for a second to allow the ratchet to click round and then press again.

The 340s have a simple ratchet that should adjust after 1 application only, but if they're seized up then the shoes can't move freely and so they do affect normal braking, They normally seize, as Dai says, where they stick out from the drum, dismantle, WD-40, heat and a hammer normally sort them......

Pettaw's the man to ask on that front. I'm sure I'd read that the handbrake operates the self adjusters, but then I've now read that it's the regular foot-brake.

On the 340 both foot and handbrakes work the adjuster as all the movment is at the top.
In good working order you can do handbrake turns with a 300.
On the mechanism front it may well be worth buying them new while we still can.

My black GLT could lock the rears with the handbrake. Very well actually (see my avatar pick )

I've not actually tried handbraking a 300 before - but Al pulled off a rather nice slide last weekend in his by doing so!
