Change over happened around 1985, and there's a few mongrels from that era, e.g. Mk3 alloys with Mk2 wings.

Yeah, not people on this board, i really appreciate the advice, i think this repair may be beyond me, and so may have to pay someone to do it, a scary prospect if they have no idea what they are talking about as i have found.
Anyway got a chance to look last night, and when the car is in gear you can turn the prop with which it makes a clancking noise. Also with the handbrake off and the car in gear you can move the car easily.
Are the props on the 1.4 and 1.7 the same? i think they are but not sure.

hmm, sounds like the fault is at the gearbox end then. Either the splines have rubbed smooth or the prop has seperated from the rubber doo-dahs (technical term there

)

Having no luck finding a prop, have had to buy a another car to use!. I am going to take mine off road and take my time and fix the prop and all the other things on the list properly. I am not going to take the chance of having someone bodge it and paying them for the privilege!

Go to Ebay and search for "Volvo (300*, 340*, 345*, 360*) -Haynes" (without the quotes) and you should get all 300 related stuff, but not too many Haynes manuals. Bookmark / favourite the results page and you can check back with one click. Now you shouldn't miss anything

Finally after all the rain and a knackered back I have had chance to have a proper look at my car. I have taken the prop off and smooth splines on the clutch end. I seem to have been quite lucky as there is a tiny bit of twisting on the clutch output shaft but not much. It might make lining up the splines on the new prop tricky but once on i think it will be fine.
It looks like its got a diff and or gearbox leak as there is thick sludge covering everything, i have drained the diff and removed the end cover to fit a new a new gasket. The problem i have now is that i can't get the filler plug out, i think someone in the past has tried to fix the leak by smearing some kind of red gasket round the end plate and over tightening the filler plug, it is actually slightly twisted.
So you guys totally right as always, i am so glad i didn't take it to a garage as it would have had a new diff and still wouldn't move anywhere!!!.
