Only ever seen one, a green one in France in 1992, it just sounded so wrong! Well saved!

So wrong, it's just so good? A bit like a Scotch pie?

Back in 1994 I remember changing exhaust manifold gasket for customer's 340 diesel while I was working at garage.

If I'm not mistaken there was also another one, older gentleman had it and there was some warranty issues, something to do with water in fuel and water separator not doing it's job if I don't remember very wrong.

It is an odd car from my memory, throttle is on or off pretty much, can't remember there being much any difference in acceleration no matter what position of throttle one used.

Wasn't this based on 1.7 petrol block and prone to end itself because of bit weak design?

Should be cheap to run with used grease or something like that and probably claims of motor being bad design are much talk from nothing, they say same from 240 diesel too and there has not been anything wrong with it except rust eating structural parts of it.

Those are very few these days, we have to try and save what we still can, good job there! :D

Here's the mileage:

But I've no idea when the engine was changed from a D16 to F8M.

and some of the dead thick sound deadening:

Looks very interesting under that bonnet. What sort of Renault is the replacement engine from, do you know?
Chris_C wrote:Nice one bud! Never seen one before either.

My mileage is 231,000 (turned 231 at the National this weekend :D )
That's quite an acheivement Chris, I hadn't realised! I got rid of my S40 1.6D at just under 120,000 miles, as it was getting a bit tired - it was only 6 years old. I'm sure I should know this, but what engine is in your car then?

Fake made it to 210,323 (I say made... she was dragged kicking and screaming) on the B172k. Me and Pettaw discussed 14,000 miles before this how it was likely the HG was pressurising the coolant system but I was a poor student at the time. Since 210,323 she's been with an F7R from a Megane

You seem to have a knack of finding rare RHD 300s, the only known RHD "Black Beauty" (or whatever it was called in the UK, no-one seems to know!), and now the only RHD diesel on the forum. What's next, a RHD factory R-Sport maybe ;-) ?

Great find. IIRC there's a vacuum powered brake servo unique to the V300 diesel which can be prone to fail, also the Rotodiesel fuel pump can be an issue AFAIK.

Cheers

Tom

yeah someone has been stupid, if the original D16 broke, it would be an ideal time to swap it for a 1.9 rather than exactly the same 1.6-F8M
the whole layout is D16 looking at the pics, D16 is volvo's modified F8M for V300 fitment, with the vacuumpump beltdriven on the rh side of the engine; below the exhaust manifold rather than on the back of the cylinder head (like it's on the F8M)

Maybe I should write to all the previos owners and ask who did it? I might do this anyway in case someone remembers it.

Slowness is all part of the magic though.

The vacuum pump like this:

Although, yet again, someone's been there before me with a zillion washers on that pump mount.

yeah that defintaly proves there's been a swap, the vacuumpump is the biggest difference compared to F8M, the rest is nearly the same.
you'd be surprised what the 1.9 version would do, compare it to the nimbleness of a stock 1.7 with the economy of a B14 when giving it the beans :P there's one in V3C with a 1.9 fitted when the D16 broke, TD would be even better imo but atleast its a start and much better daily driving abilities compared to the 1.6D

Well that's the last thing I looked at. The first giveaway for me was the "Elf" sticker on the oil cap, then I looked at the engine number, before checking the vacuum pump. Noticed all the sound deadening, spare in boot, "DIESEL" on fuel cap, plastic fuel tank. It would be nice if it still had it's original engine, but hey-ho, this'll do me. At least it's a pukka factory diesel car and not a homebrew.

I see now that someone has put what looks like a Pug pump on it.

Yep, it would cost me 137 yoyos more to tax every year  (582 instead of 445)

STILL....

With not quite the original motor...it is still a fairly original and super rare 340 Diesel. Well done Richard!!!

Any chance of you doing a visit to the 300 graveyard for a set of 340 badges for the Museum collection ??
