....So the 440 TD will go in.... Will the standard 340 gearbox still be used?

Yes Gareth - it's almost identical to the 1.7 petrol unit. There will undoubtedly be some little issues along the way, but in principle it should fit right in.
cheers

I'm intrigued as to exhaust mani, not sure what the head outlet pattern is, as I don't recall any of the pattern mani gaskets quoting the 440TD as well as the straight 400/300, I guess a new one would be needed

You'd get it done in no time otherwise. I really need to learn to weld

well i found some info on this engine and tuning stuff but i know not many are intersted in that
90hp stock (still havent found a touque figure)
50+mpg
,
right my friend Greg has one he did some mods to it : variable boost control,(cost him 15euros) 115hp he got from this, not full on as he didnt want to put more strain on the engine. k&n filter ,stanless exhaust(unknown size)and some mod to the intercooler
he reckens he has around 125/130hp he is also fitting a electronic dumpvalve.
and it still will do 50mpg
only problem i can find is that its diesel and iam not sure i could live with the noise
btw 115 was a dyno figuer he has the sheet somewhere

A TD conversion is definately a good idea for a 300 IMHO. Someone do it
And a dump valve on a diesel? What exactly will it be dumping?

well erm if you didnt already know the 1.9 td is a turbo charged moter
looked at one today at the scappy and its definatly a turbo charged engine
the non turbo 1.9 is the clio one and it has very little more than the 1.6 something like 65hp but more touque.

I know, but it's also a diesel motor. Which means the air intake is not throttled, so when you take your foot off the loud pedal there's no build up of pressure anywhere so there's nothing to be released. So a dump valve would do absolutely nothing.

Diesels have them as the turbo still makes presure so there is excesse when pedel is lifted,
maybe thats why diesels have electronicly operated dump valves?
iam no expert on diesels but ive seen that they have them
anyway i think i might do this engine swap at somepoint
it should be better than the 1.7petrol anyway.

Yeah, but on a diesel there's no throttle butterfly so the air is not restricted - it'll go straight from the turbo into the inlet manifold. So when you close the throttle there is no build up of pressure like on a petrol engine meaning there is no air to dump. Trust me on this I've had a few TDs and know a thing or 2 about them!
Any dump valve on a diesel is purely a bit of bolt on tat that's there to make the 'whoooosh' noise. It wont do anything for performance at all.

mhhh interesting,it would be a waste of 150 quid just for a whoosh sound.
i really want to learn more about diesels i know quite a bit of the basic combustion stuff is the same ie add more air + fuel = more power but there are other bits and pieces that i want to know.
Cheers

Definately
If you have any particular questions give me a shout and I'll try to help if I can. Or just start googling

I'd love to do a TD swap....but a 'utility' vehicle of this nature would have to be capable of towing a car trailer (and a car!), and 300s are a bit small & lightweight for that. 240 with a D5 swap it is, then
cheers
