hi

Chris.. got your pics yesterday as Sharons 440 TD was a little juddery in 4th gear (low revs I guess) after starting from work. wouldnt start at all on friday and couldnt get it to go on sunday. it started but soon stalled.

got some underbonnet shots for you.

Carl, diesels having no BOV? Im sure there is vaccum accuator on the side of my 440TD turbo..

getting a green book from volvo so will hopefully be able to figure what the problem is...

glow plugs ok, powering up for the correct time

stop solenoid seems ok but need to check cold start solenoid as that changes timing for cold starts.

I'll update here in case its helpful for 1.6 340 people - do they also have Lucas CAV pumps? and for anyone getting a 440TD for their 340!

I'm very sure the 440TD will not have a BOV as standard. You sure it's not the wastegate actuator?

As for your problems, sounds a bit like there could be air in the system. Or maybe a blocked fuel filter.

If this valve in on the side of the turbo, rather than on the intake pipework somewhere, it's almost certainly the wastegate actuator.

Interesting - very much like the B172, but with what I assume is a vacuum pump on the end of the cam?

That's definitely the wastegate actuator in the last pic.

Awesome, looks like the intake manifold doesn't need touching by the looks of that, so it's just exhaust... what are the odds of a square 4 bolt flange on the mani/downpipe fitment ;)

Cheers Shimon, much appriciated

the thing in place of the dist is indeed a vacume pump

it looks exactly like a 1.6td in the renault 5 only in the 5 its not turbo and not electronic,

that 1.9td would suit MJ as he never goes over 3000rpm ;)

and they can rev to 5500rpm with is pritty fast for a diesel.

if i found a 440 1.9td tomorrow for 50 euros i would buy it and do the swap. but the last i went to see was going for 1500 euros with out mot,

Cheers

I think 340 diesels had Rotodiesel fuel pumps
Image
but AFAIK Lucas CAV & Rotodiesel are just different brand names used in different markets for the same part ...

From the green books I've looked at of the D16 in the 300, it's the same block as the B172, same as the 1.9TD in the 400.

I'm guessing the R5 is a D16 with the inherent slowness that goes with it Will?

erm yes

r5 weighs 800kg the engine has around 60hp ahh haynes says its really 55hp at 4800 RPM 100nm torque at 2250 RPM.

its slow, but not any worse that a 1,1 fiesta :P 0-60mph around 20secs

the only gear that seams to do anything once moving is 5th 1 st is great start and then its just boring, it will do 100mph ok its quite a revy engine for a diesel goes up to 5400RPM i believe. doesent seem to affect fuel consuption going fast :S

very reliable its done 272000kms and since we have had it its had noproblems so in 3 years its been fine, not smoky, but smelly

but if it was in the volvo....BORING! ive been in one its horrible.

1.9td would be interesting though

Cheers
will
