In US south of big lakes there is quite nice snowing, can be some 6 foot in day or two when it hits worst. Once I did read from news that Police department had lost one of it's cars that was parked side to road, they did not remember exact spot and there was so much snow that car could not be seen.

Snow pics are perhaps from Austria and Ice pics are probably from France, I think it was France where ocean caused that kind of icing in that certain location, normally cars would just get soaked with salty water.

Salt is very bad for cars, btw. Road salt causes cars to rot so bad that just in one or two winters there will be need for some welding if not protected against that salt, it is really annoying stuff in much of other ways too, it sticks to windows, it makes wiper blades useless very fast etc.

That is bit more understandable there, but here where is snow and winter for good part of the year it is totally insane how much they put that stuff to roads.

However it does not work too well under -5 or colder, so even they did started with huge amount of salt for this winter, they have not been able to use it for long long time, still traffic flows like before, can't see really reason why to put it on roads as everyone has winter tyres, that is demanded by the law.

Here they put it top of snow, so it makes slush, most annoying element of all that there is at winter roads. Together with salty slush that wet salty road is one very annoying one, can't see anything, can't tell if it is slippery or not and when salt frozes it is much more slippery than normal ice. Just stupid to try to make summer to winter time.

Also recent studies show that removing snow cover increases temperatures, which is bad. Amount of paved roads and areas is quite huge, it has impact globally as quite often there have been trees that are removed from way of road.

I can't decide whether I should wash the salt off my car or keep it on there to protect the car from further salt (surely a layer of salt can only rust so much)

Salt will build up, if you don't wash it away, there will be just more layers, which start to store moisture and salt + moisture is like very strong salt liquid, much worse than parking your car to sea...

Bottom of car is most important, specially all places where it does build up more easily. So if one likes to prevent car from rusting it is needed to wash from below very carefully with Pineline or similar as salt is not going away with just water.

It is pain, utter pain and will only slow down of what will come. Good waxoil threatment once in a year at late summer will give best protection, but every place must be very well treated.

I hadn't washed my GLT for over a year (OK, it was off the road for a bit). Now, I've washed it three times in two weeks.

Salt is rust's best friend. Get rid of the stuff as often as you can ... There's a place near me where you can use their pressure hose, costs around 2 Euros to get the car clean. Worth every cent
