Post by CBA »

my engine be tapping. also not running nice like I had my 1.4 running.
Iunderstand the physics and methodology of fitting shims but who makes them? what material and what diameter?

cheers. due for a ruddy good service and its playing on my mind.

1.7? There is a Volvo special tool for removing them from the bucket (well, holding the thing down). Then put a feeler gauge in to check the slop and use a micrometer to measure what you have at the moment, drive to Volvo and see if the one you need from the calculation is still available.

Most were individually last time I did it, just the complete set wasn't. Green book details the procedure, the special tool is around £30. The other thing worth doing is measuring the diameter of the shims, there is one size that is standard in all things Imp, Dolomite etcetcetc and knowing what else looks like it's been scavenged from the parts bin every so often it wouldn't surprise me to find that the diameters are the same (i.e. imperial not metric). If so that opens up a whole new set of sources for them, it just wasn't something I'd thought about when I did mine! I have been thinking about is starting to pull them from Renaults/400's in scrappy's to build up a bit of a stock as although Fake doesn't use them my tubby still will.
