Got myself a new whip

Post by magnumpi »

I had an itch which needed itching and i've always wanted one of these.
So last week while doing my usual thing of looking at various bits of automotive tat i had the urge to make a compulsive purchase.
This was helped by the fact the car in question was nice and local (only 7miles away) and rather nicely priced.

On the Friday i made the phone call and a viewing was arranged for that evening. I went and had a look after work, liked what i saw so left a deposit.
Saturday i go back and now my name is only the second to be on the logbook :D

I'm not sure what my plans are with it but for the time being i'm enjoying driving it.

Like i say it had one owner from new just shy of 95k on the clocks when i bought it, a little over a month on the tax and 4 or 5 months left on the mot. Sadly it has no service history which stikes me as a bit odd but judging by the overall condition and a few old mot's i'd say the milage is genuine. However I did get the original purchase receipt from 1/08/88 with the grand total back the of £12395

Being one owner from new i reckon it had an elderly owner (i bought it from a trader) and it has got a few unsightly parking scrapes, however the overall shell is sound with no rot in the usual suspect areas of these so i'm more than happy with it.

I stop my drivel now as i bet you are all wondering what i've got, well it's got the right pedigree at least

Here is the beast in question, The Panzer :D

So does anyone know much about these, it's got a few silly little niggles but overall it drives like a Rolls Royce compared to my 300

Hi mate.
Spot on buy there. A mate of mine who kindly stores my two donner cars has one.
He has promised me a drive in it when he gets it MOTd. Its a real cracker of a car.

Thanks guys, to be honest it would be hard for you lot not to like it, i mean it's a Volvo after all!

How tech were Volvo boffins back in the day, i ask as everytime it hits 75mph upwards it makes a horrific screaching noise from the dash. I know mechanical speedo's can spin and make a squeal, but this sounds like some sort of electrical buzzer, atleast it makes me stick to the speed limit.

With regards to tinkering with it i'm not sure. The ride height will be getting a small adjustment, but it's so nice to have a "normal/modern" feeling car to drive. I've even been down roads with speedbumps in and you barely notice them, in the 340 i avoid them like the plague

It's solidly built and feels as heavy as an Aircraft carrier in comparison to the fishing trawler, aka the 300.

Looks great! I've always wondered what these were like, not too slow I've heard? (probably is compared to your 340!). Nearly got tempted a couple of times.

Wheels make a huge difference on these, I always think the 'Virgos' look a bit small and tucked in at the rear. Nice design, just a shame they're not 16" :)

TURBO!

I say again.
Better mpgz and much more powers (I remember Foggy telling me a few times), no arguing with the coolness though. Ive nearly boaught one er, twice or three times. Im not sure.
After a long line of lowered cars, I do enjoy a bit of standard ride height wafting now and again......... mmmmm comfortable.

Thats the thing Steve, they technically aren't slow (for their time atleast) but yeah in comparison to my 300 it does feel a bit like a tractor
I fully agree on the wheel front aswell, they are a nice design just a shame they didn't do them in bigger sizes.

VND- I feel i can justify saying i'm getting too old for slammed cars now as I turn 30 in two weeks time

Evoman- Well to start with I'm just going go over all the niggly problems and get everything working as it should.

-On the ever growing list of to do jobs is thus far:
give it a good service and clean out the PCV in an oil pipe due to them being a common clogging spot which apparently affects the performance.
-Make the interior lights work with the door buttons, not just the switch on the light itself.
-Investigate a knocking on the front nearside suspension (oddly my mates 240 makes exactly the same noise and it's passed the last 2mots like that)
-" " a suspected blow from the down pipe.

So nothing major just silly little jobs.
A turbo would be the ultimate goal, but i don't want to end up with two (3 really including the bug) modified cars that aren't exactly practical for everyday use.

Ahhh old cars, gotta love 'em

Yeah boi! That's a sweet ride there. I loved my GLT saloon, endlessly comfortable and a pleasure to own.

The headlights didn't work, there was water leaking into the transmission fluid (new rad needed) and it filled up the time between fixing the 340 (my 340 was very broken at that period in time). Plus there was no room for it and it did 18mpg everywhere. I did love it to bits though. Sold it to a guy who I think must have scrapped it as the tax is due since last year :( Ah well, can't save them all.

It was a choice of the 240 or the 340. My 340 is better in many ways and easier to live with (better mpgs, moar powerz, easier to park, quirkier) and it's the first car I've ever been completely satisfied with. No way I'm selling it!

Tuzboooo!

I say one last time.

A 240 with a 2.3 turbo, at standard height, would be a KILLER practical every day use car. I dunno why more people dont do it. The styling kicks your face in with cool-boots, The reliability would be un-quiz-questionable and the mpgs/insurance would be livable too.

The ONLY way you could improve after that would be LPG and banded 16" steels. he he he. 8) But then we are indeed getting into the realms of fantasy.

TURBO!!!!!!!!
