Temporary b14 mods
Hi guys, as you may have seen from my other thread I am going to be dropping a Renault 5 turbo engine in my Volvo after the winter. The only thing is I want more power from the b14 until it gets changed. I'm going to sort out the exhaust and probably get a k&n bolt on filter. Are there any other suggestions for a wee bit more power?
Can I get a cam? Or better plugs? Leads? Carb jets etc?
I read a thread about twin carbs, is this something worth looking into?
Thanks in advance, Tom
Edit* - also will a 1.7 5 speed bellhousing, gearbox and diff fit my Volvo?

Hi mate.
I recently put a five speed box into my mk1 345. All the bolt are in the same place
so it is a strait swap. You wonn't have to do anything with the bell housing.
Prop shaft is also the same.
Chers Mark.

Re: Temporary b14 mods
Does anybody know where I can purchase a k&n (or similar) bolt on to carb filter. Also what exhaust is best suited to a 1.4? Straight through? Single box? Looking to get a filter, sort the exhaust then maybe some plugs and leads and that will do engine mod wise until I get the b14t in I think

Perfect cheers mate, I'll just buy one of them then I think, give it a week an I'll order that and plugs and probably leads too, then do oil and filter and mod exhaust all at the same time

Re: Temporary b14 mods
there is an alternative to the k&n bolt on..... k&n do a direct replacement thats a streight swap for the round paper filter that goes in the air box...... the k&n part number is e-2820 i have one in my 340 and cant fault it..... i think you can get them on ebay a bit cheaper than the bolt on ones too

Re: Temporary b14 mods
Cheers for the heads up spike.
They seem about £30 whereas the bolt-on is a little more pricey. Anyone know which is best/better???....

Re: Temporary b14 mods
as for which is best performance wise i dont know......
i went with the direct replacement one as using the bolt on one would do away with the hot-air pickup and i was told by someone on here that the bolt on ones can cause starting/running rough problems in cold weather....... dont know if theres any truth to this ... i just played it on the side of caution

Re: Temporary b14 mods
ah yes i can see why people may suggest that idea now. Hadn't thought about hot air inlet. I had a subaru mv pickup 1.8 with a K&N on once and that did play up a little in the cold conditions, Also it used to run rough (i was told due to heat build up)...May just stick to a replacement element and crack on with plugs, leads etc
Cheers Spike

Re: Temporary b14 mods
ok mate i'll keep you up to date, As i say my first mods will be
-K&N Filter
-Iridium spark plugs
-Magnecore leads
-Free flowing exhaust
-Good service
then depending how long it takes for me to sort the B14T out, i may look into making a custom manifold at work and looking at twin carbs
or the likes. possibly some mild headwork/cam or similar.
I know it would be quicker/easier/cheaper to drop in a bigger engine but i like having unusla project

^Bike carbs? Think people have ran ZXR 600 carbs on 1.4 TU engines. Never seen them on a B14. So I dare you.

Re: Temporary b14 mods
im currently researching a way to make a b14 turbo (or possibly a renault 5 gt swap) work with a cvt ...... so far all im hearing is that it cant be done as the cvt cant handle the power...... but my feeling is that where theres a will (and a credit card) theres always a way

More expensive that a manual. But would be epic.
