REDEX FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER?

I have got into the bad habit lately of running my car to a maximum of 25 miles once the yellow reserve petrol lights come on! And just recently it's been running a bit weird eg;I cant just start it on the key, it needs depression of the accelerator pedal at the same time.

A friend suggested that I put Redex into the fuel system so I've bought some. It says the following on the 250ml bottle:

Directions: Pour 1/2 of the 250ml bottle (as indicated by the lines on the side of the bottle) into a full (50 litre) tank of unleaded petrol every time you fill up.

Intensive Carburettor Treatment: Remove air filter and start engine, adjusting idling speed to fast tick over. Pour 1/2 of the bottle slowly through the carburettor air intake to remove carbon deposits from carburettor slides and inlet valves. Replace air filter and re-adjust carburettor to normal idling speed then rev up engine to expel surplus Redex.

Is it worth me doing the "Intensive Carburettor Treatment" first and if so where is the carburettor air intake? Im guessing its the two circular-ish openings underneath the air filter and on top of the carburettor?

Also my volvo 340dl has a fuel tank capacity of 45 litres and I only ever put £30 worth of unleaded in it every Saturday. Baring this in mind how much of the 250ml redex bottle should I put in when filling up with £30? Im guessing a quarter of the bottle? Also is it best to put it in before filling up or after?

I'd guess it would be those openings but i know nothing about carbs really

I'd stick 1/4 the bottle in. I've always thourght if you put it in first then put the petrol in, the rushing petrol will mix it up a bit for you.

I have done the intensive treatment several times and I'm sure its very effective but it usually works out to be a bit embarassing afterwards because you find that about 10 minutes into your first drive anywhere the Redex starts to decoke the inside of your exhaust pipe and you generate vast clouds of smoke driving down the local high street.... worth knowing about that..... you will see other cars pulling over to avoid the smoke.... maybe its just me but I would check all other possible sources of starting trouble (electrics, carb gaskets might be leaky, loose, etc) before trying that one. Apart from that it is absolutely wonderful.
