Cruise control

Post by 85GLT »

I am trying to fit a cruise control from a 240 to my 360GLT. The only thing stopping me is I don't have a speedo take off. On the 240 it also has a machanical speedo with a coil unit that screws to the back to conect the cruise control to. On the back of the 360 speedo it has a tab you can brake off that exposes a port to screw a similar unit in place. Unfortunantly the 240 one won't fit as it is a different size and shape to what would be needed.
Has anyone seen this sort of thing before. I tried to get one from Volvo but they where no help. If anyone knows anthing about this I would appreciate a reply.

If anyone can tell me how to put pictures on here I'll show you exactly what I mean.

I am also after some electric mirrors, so if you have some you want to offload please let me know.

What about a 700 series speedo would that fit, and would it have the take off?

Hey 85 GLT, if you send me the photos of the 200 series cruise control i will post them for you! Send to volvo360glt@hotmail.com . Also how about fit another speedo cable to the right hand wheel, and reverse it's direction (as it would be in reverse), then use that to run the cruise control. Would that work.

Get back to me with the pics

Cheers

that would work actually, what you could do if nessesary is run it into the back of a 240 speedo (thats hidden away somewhere) and then from there to the cruise control.

btw, i dont *think* you'd have to reverse it, but i could very well be wrong (depends how the speedo mesures the speed).

200 series cruise is uber-rare here, so I was planning to use a 700 or 900 unit. That uses an electric pulse generated by a sender plugged into the rear diff. If the 240 take-off is from the speedo....that makes it SO much easier. Without seeing it I can't offer any suggestions, but making a cable fit can't be as hard as making a geared sender fit onto a wheel hub!

Have a look at the back of a Golf/Scirocco/Passat instrument cluster(from the type with the MFA computer) as they have a speed sensor on them that would work the cruise control if it would fit???

Any update / progress report?

I found a cruise kit on a scrap 960 a short while ago, but the day was far too hot for me to even think about taking it.

The big problem however you approach it is the speed pickup. Having said that, any speed sensor giving out the right sort of pulse will work - surely *something* must fit a 300 series speedo cable?! With an output would be ideal.

for some reason, you need a vacume thing as well, and a 3 pully system, and...

any ideas why?

Well it uses variable vacuum to open the throttle. I'll take a pic of the kit on Dad's 940 tonight.

Surely Foggy you could borrow what the Fuel Computer uses for its speed pick up.

A magnetic sensor mounted above the drive shafts with one or two bits of metal attached to the driveshaft.

Well that had occured to me ;) I'll have to hook up an oscilliscope to the speedo output of dads car to figure out what kind of output it has.

cheers

have you not actually realised that it doesnt matter if the readings are the same - as long as they are within the same range. ie, if the cruise control thinks you're going 30, when you're going 60, it doesnt matter cos it will keep you going at what it thinks is 30, and you realise is 60. aha!

btw, dont see how a vacume can open/close the throttle.
