But I could do with a diesel ( cos im a cheapskate

) and was wondering what sort of diesel engines go straight into the volvo and what sort of cost would be involved?

AFAIK the Renault 1.6 diesel engine in the 340 was the same one fitted to the diesel versions of the R5, R9, R11, Express/Rapid.
You might get a bit more help on that in the French forum, they're a bit more used to diesels

Pete has a Nissan Turbo Diesel engine of some sort in a rusty old 360 shell. It was some sort of partial conversion that was abandoned after the engine was fitted.
Anyway yeah Volvo did do a 1.6 diesel. It was a diesel version of the 1.7 Renualt engine. Low tech, and very reliable.....Only trouble is its slower than a barge being pulled by a moped. 0-60 was about a minute I think. Also they weren't available in the UK, although possibly a few may have crept over from Ireland where they were available.

+1
It was the slowest 300 ever made, and IIRC the fuel consumption at motorway speeds is hardly better than a 1.4 petrol at double the noise level.
I could post a couple of tech spechs out of a brochure at home if you're (still) interested ...

fuel consuption should be over 60mpg and thats pedal to the floor
and once you get going its fine

when i was in bordeux the other day i got a ride in one i guess 0-60 in a minute is about right

nah its a bit better than that.
would do 140km/h ok but its boring 1 million times worse than the r5 diesel and thats very boring
id go for a r19 turbo diesel engine i think its possible and it would shift nicly

Hmm, I think that the standard diesel is out of the running then! The performance of the 106 is bad enough!
The biggest problem is a gearbox to work with it, I suppose I could just try overhauling the 1.4 petrol to try and get better than the 20mpg it had when i stopped using it!

hi there!
would it be possible to get a pdf scan of the diesel 340 brochure? would be interesting as they never came to the UK (Volvo Ireland did sell RHD diesels by modifying the engine mounts to make the engine lean over away from the steering column and servo)
thanks

I've got a Mk2 340 Diesel brochure at home. Problem is:
1) it's in German
2) my scanner's in a box in the attic
It wouldn't be a problem typing up some of the technical stuff, the marketing blurb isn't that interesting anyway ...

Some of the tech stuff would be brill if you could get it mate.
I miss my old tank but the go-kart i drive at the moment does 40mpg even if you drive the tyres off it (and 60+ if you dont

)
That one of the reasons i stopped driving the 340, the 20-25mpg i was getting out of it was emptying the back a bit quick

. That and it would need some work to get throught the MOT, might just bite the fuel bullet and get a 360, might as well have some performance for my sub 30mpg

I had a 340 1.6 Diesel
0 to 100 in 20 seconds, top speed was not bad, it can make 155 km/h quite easily and with tima and space, more than 160.
Consumption was great! In some trips I get 4l/100km !
the sound of the engine inside is awfull, but it is fun to drive.
I'm searching for another one to buy
By the way, they can be fitted with the 1.9D from Renault or the 1.9 Turbo Diesel from 440 TD
The first one is damn easy swap!

OK, here goes:
340 DL Diesel 1985 5 speed
D16
1585 cm³
54 PS / 4800 U/min
9,35 m turning circle (same as 1.7 & 360)
Vmax 140 kph
0-100kph 20,0s
Fuel consumption l/100kms (town / 90kph / 120kph)
7,0 / 4,7 / 7,4
Just to compare:
340 DL Petrol 1986 5 speed
B14.4S
1397 cm³
68/5400
9,20 m turning circle
Vmax 160 kph
0-100kph 15,0s
Fuel consumption l/100kms (town / 90kph / 120kph)
10,1 / 5,3 / 7,5
Sounds like a 1.9 conversion's a good idea unless you do lots of town driving ...

There, that was quicker than getting the scanner out

hey 0-100 (0-62 mph) in 20 secs, not bad, better than I imagined and about the speed of some of todays 997cc plastic tastic runabouts

that's with absolutely thrashing it though.

4l/100km - i agree with that
0-100 20 secs i agree too
