renault c1j turbo engine in a rhd 340

Post by volvodspec »

good afternoon!

as some of you have allready seen in another topic, i currently own the turbo conversion done by frits hendrickx. i'm just having minor problems with finding a suitible car to load it into for a project car. it has to be a 1.4 3dr model from 86 (mk3) for a basis.

in the nl a guy well known by v3c is offering a rhd 340 dl 86 3drs, exactly what i'm looking for!

but i was wondering how it will fit because of the lhd to rhd conversion for the current engine...

what about the clearence with downpipe and the brake mastercylinder, and the clearance with the steering rod?

anyone of you got pictures of a c1j (1.4 renault 5gt turbo) fitted into a rhd 340?

thx :D

Ive always figured for minimal fuss, move the washer bottles and battery tot he spare wheel side of the engine bay and mount the turbo etc in the sopace where the battery and wwasher bottles used to sit then feed the downpipes etc from there.

No pics of a R5 tubby, but have a look at my project thread to give you a clue. What makes you want a RHD? LHD really is more suited to turbos!

This may be total cack as i have not had any experiance with this engine, but does the fact the lower steering column and the joint limit the location of the turbo some what? (RHD car only)

From looking at an R5 the other day, the stock manifold puts the turbo where the heater box is, slightly on the passenger side. (Front right of engine in the R5). Frits made his own manifold didn't he?

yes he did make his own manifold. the turbo is on the same height as the cylinder head, and the wastegate has 3 cm clearence with the rightside chassis beam. when you look from the side of the engine, the centre of the turbo is about where the 3rd cylinder is. the way it looked in a lhd, the downpipe would get in trouble with the head master cylinder of a rhd..

about the rhd, this is gonna be a complete project. not just the engine swap. in holland they are going to freeze the rights of oldtimership in 2011, every car that is not 25 jrs old by then, won't get the cheaper taxes and stuff. i allready have a huge amount of parts for a mk3 3drs, so the car has to be a 340 3 doors mark 3 from 85 or 86 to suit my demands. currently there are no such cars available in holland, only a rhd '86 3dr 340dl and having all the parts laying around, i'm dying to get started on the project:) i have even concidered taking a mk2 and converting it to a mk3. but unfortunatly, most mk2's offered are rustbuckets wich will mean a whole load of extra hours and costs.

Perhaps a nice holiday to the UK is called for?
with a cheeky purchase and a nice drive home?
I hear ferrys run from the 'dam to north shields regularly?
And the north east is full of helpfull 300 heads. :D

If youd like anything sorted out, dont hesitate to ask.

the rhd car located in the netherlands allready has a full nl license, wich also saves me a lot of extra work, i'm not thingkin about importing a car from the uk..

as it looks the way it looks now, it will be the rhd 340 offered in the netherlands for the project car. the car has had it last mot from 1990, and i believe it has been parked indoors the rest of it years.

i will change the exhaust anyways, for a full custom stainless steel one, the headmaster cylinder wont be the biggest problem i think.. and about the steering rack, for the inner ball-bullets (what do you cal these?) lhd pieces should fit, the housing of the rack can't be swapped out from lhd to rhd. the mot failure is a play on the outer side of the steering rack, a bush located at the end of the rack gets too much play. i'm planning on reproducing this bush in a very heavy duty plastic material, so it won't wear. anyways, aferall the steeringrack won't be a problem...

for a example of the result i'm after, the car from 340glt on this forum comes very close by outside looks.. interior will definatly be completely different. he did a nice job on his car aswell, and still going better. that's my style, perfection in every way that you can think of.

Ebay has reckon racks in the UK for a tenner often, is it worth stumping up the however much postage as overall it might still me cheaper? (I think you mean ball joints between the rack and the track rods that have play? The order is track rod end, track rod, actual rack, track rod, track rod end in English with ball joints between rack and track rods)

Brake master isn't too bad for position, aside from the turbo toastying the brake fluid. The manifold Dai got made for me has solved this nicely by sticking the turbo up in the air.

thanks for posting that! will try to fit that into my english vocabulary, i did mean those yes:D

i also have to get a go at making a few heatshields anyways., could make one for the headmastercylinder aswell..

i also want to remove the spare tire from under the bonnet, move the battery and change the windscreenwiperfluid and coolant expansion locations, the stock 340 tank will be swapped for a 360 fuel tank, and then the spare tire will be fitted underneath the car. this way i'm not stranded when having a flat tyre, the interior will be heavaly modified, full kicker audio. the boot won't even leave enough room for a box of beer:D

Tie rod ends and inner tie rods should be the same for both LHD and RHD. As you say, it's only the rack which is different. AFAIK the t/r/ends fit from other cars as well, such as Golf Mk1s ...

According to my parts cross reference list, there are some "universal" track rod ends which supposedly fit the V300. Some examples:

A.B.S. 230555 fits Porsche 924, VW Golf / Jetta / Scirocco Mk1, VW T2, T3, Volvo 300
DELPHI TA770 fits BMW 3 (E21), Porsche 944, VW Golf / Jetta / Scirocco Mk1, VW T2, T3, Volvo 300

I'd still buy 300-specific part though, such as those from Quinton Hazell. They have two versions, one for the 300 up to 12.84 and one from 01.85.

Inner track rods appear to be unique to the 300 series, that goes for the PAS versions as well.

Tom

BTW Volvo don't sell any of them anymore :-(

From what I remember that would not fit in RHD drive car because of the position of the turbo. If you changedf the manifold to move the turbo to the front then it would work.

Dai, you are right
a pic of the 340L from frits;

Image

this shows that with the current exhaust system, te turbo downpipe will fully penetrate the headmastercylinder.

hmm. various thoughts about the rhd cross my mind. i could still convert it to a lhd but that also means a bit of extra work.. moving the turbo won't be an answer, can't move it too far forward. then it's stuck messing with the waterpump.
