fuelpipe replacement

Post by pyro »

Good evening all, just noticed a rather large and alarming fuel leak on the 360 coming from underneath, only present when running. ive taken the heat shield off, and will be replacing the cross feed pipe tomorrow, (what dia is it btw?)

anyhoo, where are the fuel pipes routed and how easy are they to replace, as ive a feeling that they are rubbing engine side, just where they enter the 'chassis rails.' is it possible to safely route them elsewhere?
how much is needed etcetc

ill be doing the filler neck pipe and jublee clip if needed.

thanks - ben

If they are the same style as 340 then they are plastic. Not loooked on a 60 TBH.

that will be the return line coming from the engine and to the petrol tank.

through the chassis beams is the best protective way. you won't need to replace the "hard" synflex pipes all through the chassis beams cause these won't wear, its the universal connection hoses that leak.

yep theyre plastic ones. it seems as though its leaking in teh grommet that the pipes go through int othe chassis. so dont know how easy it would be to replace the first 6 inches of the plastic piping.

thanks for that, ill check them in the morning, there is another leak that is obvious, like a steady shower!, coming from under the heat shield where the cross feed pipe clips on to.

ive replaced all the braided fabric pipes engine side last year when it sprung a leak.

If you want can route new pipes/hoses next to brake lines also, some early 300-series had fuel pipes going like that. Fuel pipes are routed like that in every 200-series also, next to brake lines.

I replaced all lines and routed new ones like that because it's much easier to see if there are leaks and if you don't do any rallying at the gravel roads there's not much danger that something would break, most cars have the fuel lines on the bottom of the car.

I’d also be interested in knowing the internal diameter of these hoses before I take them off the car. I think I read that the cloth covered hoses were 6mm, is that right? What is the cross link pipe?

i managed to get some 5/16th (8mm) pipe from the local factors this morning. there seems to be 2 different sizes on there, engine side its 6mm, though under the back seat where the sender is, one is 8mm, the other is 6. the cross feed one, that connects the 2 lowest point of the tank, behind the exhaust heat shield (or it is on a 360 anyway) is 8mm.

Cheers for that, saves me having to try and get the correct hoses while the car is in bits sm4
Picked up some 6mm and 8mm so should be able to replace those that are perished.
This might sound like a bit of a stupid question, but did you manage to replace the cross over pipe without draining the tank?

i took off one side of the cross over and clamped the pipe with a set of moles. (the pliers not the garden variety, tho feel free to try) stuck a bucket under the side id taken off and let it empty. it holds a suprising amount!
the best idea is probably to drain both sides, but me being a nugget, and the fact i ran out of buckets, i was 'quick' with taking of the old one and putting the new one on. its possible, tho just make sure you put the jclips on the pipe before you shove it on!
each side of the saddle takes like 10lt i tihnk. or mine did anyway!

bit of a bad day, exhaust came, but the t0ssers have sent the wrong one, i didnt have time to send it back so ive had to adapt it. it should eb alrright once i can get it to seal.
and found another fuel leak. from the same place as last time, looks like the hard fuel pipes, 'synflex' stuff has cracked/worn/rubbed etc. leaks fuel from most of the drain holes on the ns chassis rail. going to have to replace the lot just to be safe.
