the quest for 300bhp...

Post by madseb »

ok so i have not had my 360 for long and all ready my imagination is running away on its own.
ive been pricing up a few 2.3t lumps on ebay and it got me thinking,
what would i need to break the 300bhp barrier on a budget on one of these.

so if i were to start with a 2.3t lump from a 740? 940? what would be needed?
obviously a few parts would have to be bespoke, i.e induction kit, wastegate ect.
but i understand most of the parts can be interchanged from the volvo range.

thanks

Not sure what an wastegate ect is, but you can take a standard 2.3t and boost it to 250bhpish with no special parts. The 360 drive can't take much more than that anyway, personally I think any more than that is just modifying for the sake of it. If you want to upgrade the drive then Turbobricks has a full stage 0 - 4 modifications list all the way up to 400bhp.

The 2.3T comes in more than two variations but now most coming from 940's are either B230FK or B230FT's, these are the more desirable engines as they have thicker conrods and oil squirters. The former is a low pressure turbo so there is a chance that engine will have had an easier life if you're buying a used engine.

A recipe for approx 300bhp:
- B230FK/FT base engine
- 531 cylinder head & IPD Turbo/K cam/Custom Cam (to make power up to ~6500rpm)
- Bigger turbo... 19T for example, T3/T4 hybrid.. or whatever, with ported exhaust manifold
- 3" exhaust from the turbo back
- Custom management or chipped Bosch Lh2.4 from engine donor car
1989 - Volvo 360 GLT
1985 - Volvo 360 GLS
2008 - Volvo S60 SE Lux

Reliable, cheap and 300bhp!?

Might as well ask for Keeley Hawes naked in the passenger seat whilst you are there

It's certainly doable, but you are going to have to loose one of those three from the list.

the only thing to save money with a performance build is the manours by doing most of the leibor yourself. anything else you cut cost on will be directly reflected in reliability

any performance upgrade will be expensive, espescially if you desire more than twice the factory output. i do have to agree with Ride-On that you will be better off with a max of 250nm, above that m90 + 240 rear axle is the way to go.

i never said it had to be cheap.
i said it had to be on a budget.
as for labour costs, thats not an issue all the work will be done by myself, i have built engines before and fancied a crack at a turbo unit, this was the inspiration for buying the car in the first place, as parts are redily available and to an extent cheap.
i would like to know more about the rear axle mod,
what would a stock 360 gl axle bee prepaired to put up with before giving way?

also my understanding is that a 940 turbo engine would be running a 2.4ecu is this corerct? as i was looking to source a complete car to be on the safe side.

thanks for help.

I'd probably get a custom slipper made as open diffs will give out, you'll be struggling to stop one spinning. Other than that, I'm sure someone like recoprop would sort you a stronger prop (it's the little coupling bit on 360's that seem weak there) and then it's likely just a case of seeing what breaks next and uprate it

There are a lot of high power redblocks around and 300power has some high power 300's. Most of us Brits don't have anything that silly tbh.
