Well i replaced the space age tube (the preheater air hose) to the carb, and tried adjusting the fuel mix per the instructions in the sticky thread here, but i can't make the idle RPM go down below 1200 or so with the mixture all the way out. Probably the air inlet flap stuck on cold engine setting ...

Well i dunno, still struggling with it tried to take it for a long drive today on the freeway. It runs okay i guess a little rough but after driving steady especially uphill for a while going 55mph or so steady for a while it just dies and i have to sit a minute or two before i get throttle response ...

Well in Norway you can buy something called "Start gas" which you spray into the air inlet to make it easier to start in -40 degrees celsius.. probably the same stuff as carb cleaner. This works for finding leaks.



I think there is a leak somewhere, but taking the inlet manifold off just isn't ...

Still not getting better. I dunno if there might be something wrong inside the engine i.e. a pushrod or something.


It's been getting a little worse. Very noticable spluttering going uphill at 1/2 or more throttle. It's also chasing up/down a good 150rpms or so at idle, esp. with the choke engaged ...

Is the base plate tight to the bottom of the carb? Screws are located underneath the base to the carb and can come loose and are easily overlooked. And are all the vacuum hoses clean and securely connected?

Yes, very tight. I also replaced the gasket on it.

Well now im really annoyed, I've just recieved and fitted a new solenoid for the carb and it hasn't made a difference.

Well everythings sorted, still sucking air somewhere it shouldn't. Wonder if it could be the intake manifold. This is driving me crazy.

It was the alternator bearing, luckily i managed to get a replacement pretty cheap so its sorted now :)

Now just to try and fix the random cutting out, its just had a carb rebuild and new floats so cant be that. it only happens when idling ...

im not sure weather its been over tightened in the past. I checked all the belts out and they all seem pretty new. Could only have done a few hundred miles on them.

Ill try disconnecting the alternator belt.

If they're new it's possible the old owner overtightened the alternator ...

I've checked out all the belts. It sounds as though it much be a bearing somewhere but because it sounds like its scratching i want to get to the bottom of this.

does anyone know of specific bearings to check. all i can think of that may have gone is the alternator bearing ...

Okay thanks. Mine is not capable of fully opening the choke flaps and i think the spring is fitted correctly (can't think of any other way to fit it) so i guess it's just a little worn after many years. It'll still work though i guess, so I'll just leave it.

Thanks i get it now! I had a feeling the membrane was pulled in by vaccum but i thought that would be a little too advanced - guess not though :)
