I've used Volvo 740 wiper arms on my mk 3 340; from what I can tell they are identical to the original ones and far easier to obtain... Otherwise, there are a few more ways to bodge a reair than have been discussed so far:
  • - You could place a thick washer under the nut holding the arm in place to provide extra pressure when the splines are too far gone...
    - You could carefully file a slot in the side of the tower, attach the arm in the correct position and fit a pin or nail in that slot to provide a very sturdy spline...
    - If all else fails (all of the above methods combined...) you could tie a thin rope to the wiper arms and run it in a loop from wiper arm to driver side window, through the car, out the passenger side window and back to the arm and use that to operate the wipers manually...
I've tried most of these methods, with varying degrees of success... The best solution was to get a new set of wiper arms though. The good thing about the arms being made of some cheeselike alloy is that it is hard to completely strip the splines of the towers, so it's usually just a matter of cleaning them and ataching new arms to make it all work again!
