cant figure out how to remove radio

Post by Vario Si »

Got the original VC608 radio cassette player in the car still, but somethings playing up in it, it makes a nice loud clicking noise when you try and play tapes...

Anyway, I basically can't figure out how to take it out!

Can someone help please?

I'm hopefully correct in saying this model has two vertical covering strips in plastic on either side of the radio, on the edges where it fits into the opening. These are approx 10mm wide by the height of the opening. I seem to remember these clip into the four prong holes that they cover, so carefully levering them off the front of the radio will work, careful not to damage them as they are plastic. Then under these will be four small holes, two either side. You'll either need four long electrical style screwdrivers, with 2mm or so shafts to poke in them, which will work, or many stores sell the proper prong removal tools! These then release the radio from the opening. It should pull out then, as the prongs release the clips at the sides. It's a long time since I removed the original radio to replace it with something that I liked more, so my description may be wrong, and also may be different for your model. Best of luck.

Metal coat hanger.... cut and bend yourelf two 'U' shapes, and keep them in the box. I find they work bestest!!

Thanks for the advice, I was going to try it with the old coat hangers, well I did, and couldnt get any joy - couldnt locate the clips...

well actually mine doesnt appear to have gaps around the side of the radio.
The Haynes manual shows you one of the original models - and says remove the knobs and poke *tool* in gaps under where the knobs are... well my model (photo below...) has only one knob that comes off?

Wth the photo below, anyone suggest anything?

Right, that helps! Indeed, Mr Haynes only shows the original angled fronted radio. Right, on your model, the two upright parts on the fascia, right of the 2 and 4 buttons and left of the on/off volume knob do actually come off, and these are hiding the four holes (two either side) for removing the stereo. These plastic covers if I remember correctly are clipped on and have two plastic pins each going into the removal holes. So be careful how you go about removing them if you don't want to damage them.

Yes, that's right, don't try to lever them sideways cos they won't go. You need to get a thin screwdriver and prise those little caps outwards, because as Pete says, the caps have pins that go in the holes. Once the caps are out, you'll see the holes you need to put the tool into to pull the radio out.

Hope that helps

After getting those caps out yesterday, and trying for around 20minutes yesterday wiggling bits of coat hangers in the four holes I gave up.

This morning I suceeded! It was very stiff, so I took off some of the interior/insulation stuff on the passenger side and pushed it from in there whilst yanking it as hard as I could with two fingers in the tape deck!

Even then it was pretty hard to get out! That was a little bugger!

Now I need a star key to take off the antenna wire!
...and then I can get my new stereo in!

Thanks for all the help!

Cheers, Simon

New radio fitted!

Post by Vario Si »

My new stereo is fitted and works fine, although the cage part that it's meant to go in didn't fit, so I just left it out, it fits fine.

Here is a photo for the fun of it..!

I know it probably isn't the perfect stereo for the car (colour etc), but it was one of the cheapest Mp3/cd-rw ones.

Thanks again for all the previous help!

Good work mate! Looks good. I know what you mean about the colour, my Panasonic stereo was very stealth, at a glance it looked like a standard fitment, nothing out of the ordinary, being black, but then the silver can look very nice, just a shame it stands out for thieving little....... sm36
Anyway, glad it's in and working well. Enjoy!
